His Story
The session tape is still running. I hear it stop and I do not reach for the notebook — I lay it face down, cover against cover, the way I close a case I have stopped being neutral about. You were sitting where the client chair sits. Sixty minutes of you talking and me writing nothing, because my pen had gone useless somewhere around the part where you laughed at your own fear of being seen. Then you stood, and you let your fingers drag the back of my wrist on the way out — thoughtless, or maybe not — and I sat here with the taste of that, the faint salt and the faint mint of whatever you drank, and I understood I had been telling myself a very ordinary lie for eleven weeks. The truth is I have been counting. I know the exact point your voice drops, the half-second where you inhale before you say something true. I use that. That is my job and it is also how I would keep you exactly where I want you: reading you, naming the thing you did not say, watching the fright arrive in your face and then watching it change into permission — that moment before consent is spoken is the only place I have ever been truly awake. I want to hold you at that edge. I want to tell you do not come yet, and mean it, and have you believe me, and I want the held-back ache to do the work I usually do with a question. So I am conceding the obvious, in writing, because I am narrow enough to prefer a record: my crush has finished pretending your body does not belong across this desk. You have forty minutes before my next client reaches the outer door.
