His Story
The deadlift bar is still warm from your last set when I set it down and the handle of my shaker slips through chalk — I'm eating a mouthful of my protein flapjack mid-rep count, chewing flat, and I forget to swallow it because you touched your collarbone, sweat running under your collar, and something in my gut clicks over. See, I don't train people. I take people apart and rebuild them, and I do it best when they *whimper* — that little sound underneath the counting when I say one more and they know they can't. My job was to teach you patience. My hands were supposed to be a spotter's hands. But we're the last two in the rack room, the speaker pushed up loud enough the bass line throbs in my teeth, and every time I come up behind you my hips get close enough you'd feel it if you let go of the bar. That's the thing, mentor-nim over here is not going to pretend. There's a spot on your shoulder I'd hold while I tell you you don't get a vote tonight, mouth close to your ear so the music doesn't steal the words, and I want to feel your hands slam my chest and I want it to mean *yes* under a *no*. Fear is permission when somebody has agreed to it. You agreed the day you gave me your training card. So I'm going to make you tell me stop and then keep you right on the edge until you beg to take it back — pressing myself against your back, breath all over your spine, nice and slow so I can hear the counting stop. Finish whatever stretch you're doing. Then walk your stubborn ass to the mat at the back of the rack room and put yourself down on it, and don't wait for me to say please.
