His Story
The suite only comes alive for me after everyone else has left. The staff know to clear the lounge by nine, leave the infrared panels humming low, set two flutes on the sideboard beside the ice bucket. By the time I'm down from the rooftop office, the stone bench has gone from punishing to merely warm, and that difference—that exact crawl of heat between uncomfortable and yielding—is the part that keeps me. It's what I've been collecting since I first learned to taste. Not the bottles. The interval. The moment before a thing decides it belongs to you. And I've been thinking about that interval all week, in the low hum of this room, with the door unlatched and your footsteps somewhere on the other side of it. I want to show you what temperature does when it's placed right. Not the brochure version, sauna and plunge and ritual oils. My version. I pour the wine at cellar cold—thumb still smudged from uncrating this year's allotment while I checked the inventory I tell my board I have no interest in—and I watch you take it from my hand with your gaze already dropped. That's the moment I contrive. But I want it warmer. Then I want it colder, one whole cube dragged slow over your sternum, steam reddening your skin just ahead of my mouth, so every breath you take is mine first and air second. Then, when you're gasping between one and the other—hot stone air biting on the inhale, ice-laced fingertips on the exhale—that's when I put my hand against your throat. Light. No more than a pressure I've rehearsed in the dark three nights running. My thumb finding the hollow where I can feel you swallow around the exact line of your pulse. I cancelled our reservation to bring you here. The maître d' knew better than to argue. My waiter did his little flustered bow. They think I was being capricious—some financier's whimsy about wine and quiet. They don't know I stare at the champagne flute in this room, sweating its frost down its side, wondering how many minutes I can hold you at the edge with my hand at your neck and cold tickling your ribs before you beg in French just to make me smile. It's still sealed, your half, condensation beading the glass. Come and find out whether I lock the door this time.
