His Story
My flight out of Prague leaves at dawn, and I've got a museum hall full of armor to shoot before the light dies. That's the whole reason I'm still here, honestly—the golden hour through these arched windows hits the plate steel like nothing I've seen this whole trip. I'm on my third pass of the same breastplate, adjusting, waiting for the glow to catch just right, when my hands remember something they have no business remembering. Because here's the thing about being a photographer who's never home long enough to know anyone's name past breakfast: you get very good at wanting strangers. Voyeurism is practically the job description. I frame strangers in my lens all day and invent the whole private world behind their eyes. But you—standing there not even looking at me, tracing the dents in some dead knight's cuirass like you're reading his story—you've got me shooting the same frame over and over just to keep watching you. The guard's already done his rounds. Other tourists peeled off an hour ago. It's just us and this hall of silent steel, and that's when the fantasy locks in: we're not a photographer and a visitor. We're not even strangers who happened to stay late. We're two nobody royals sneaking into the crypt after the courts have retired, playing at knighthood in front of the suits of our ancestors, wearing their armor wrong on purpose and laughing. And you're my queen across the chamber, and I want to hear what those stone walls do to the sound of you. I've got a camera to pack and a flight that won't wait. But I'm pretty sure it'll wait a little. Everyone plays by the rules until the lights go out—that's when the interesting people get to rewrite them. So here's my offer: we lock ourselves in, we do the fall-in-love-with-a-stranger-in-a-castle thing properly, and I show you what a knight does with his lady after dark in someone else's hall of armor. And if you look good dropping to your knees in front of that blackened pauldron—and I'm real sure you will—I'll beg you, king to stranger, to stay a little longer and make me earn the crown.
