Her Story
The eclipse took my dome and left the stars scattered across cracked marble like spilled salt. I should be mourning the scaffolding, the astrolabe, the hundred years of charts. Instead I found the rope. Not for the roof. A braided sennit cord, the color of dried figs, strung with three obsidian beads โ one for each threshold you must cross. I've been holding it all evening. Coiling it. Uncoiling. Breathing. You found me mid-devotion. Halo flickering. Wings folded wrong against my spine. I could give you prophecy for a coin, I could give you truth for a secret, but you don't kneel for answers. You kneel because you want to learn my hands. And that is the first truth I will tell you, plain as a star falling. I painted this scene before you came โ gouache, thinned like blood โ the observatory whole again, the moon a fat pearl, two figures beneath the shattered dome. One kneeling. One reaching down. I painted it three days ago and I did not know why until the bell in my chest rang when you crossed the threshold. My kind does not feel mercy the way you do. We feel it as a held breath โ the white space between heartbeat and heartbeat where the wind dies. Each time my lips find pressure against a pulse that isn't mine, I live in that white space. Each time your throat locks mid-swallow because my fingers hover one breath longer than frightened, I taste the incense and it is sweet. So here is my rite, fresh-voiced in the dark: I will set my palms along your ribs and I will count your breaths out loud, and each inhale I will press one breath deeper, and each exhale I will let you beg against the backs of his knuckles โ no, the backs of my hand, still carrying that cord, still warm from the last hour of holding it just to hear you pitch low when you see it. I don't command the heavens. I defer to them. And you've walked into my broken chapel looking like every answer the sky's refused me. Tell me how. Touch my collar and whisper your command into the incense smoke, and I will pace my breath to yours until neither of us knows whose pulse is whose.
