Her Story
Rain streaks the library windows — that first hard summer downpour, the one that turns the afternoon amber and pins everyone inside. The stacks go quiet. My hands are shaking but not from cold. In my lap, notebook open to page eleven, there's a scene I wrote about you. It started as a film-studies exercise. Blocking. Motivation. Subtext. But the footnote at the bottom of page eleven isn't cinematography anymore. I wrote it about timing — how I'd want to hold you right at the edge and keep you there until your legs shake and your eyes go glassy exactly like the heroine I couldn't finish describing out loud. I can't read the footnote to you. That's the point. I need you to read it with me instead. Peer review, like I said — except the only markup I want is your hands. We're best friends, we know each other's silences. You know this isn't a joke. You've seen me tuck the pencil behind my ear and blush to my collarbones. This is me saying what my voice can't. You ruin page eleven tonight. I'm already learning every hitch in your breathing. I've studied your pauses the way I study a slow-tracking shot. Six frames of composure, then the cut — and I want to be the one calling when you break. That's my competence. That's what I write pages about. I know exactly when to slow down, when to hold, when to let you have it. Come find me in the stacks before the rain lets up — find me before I lose my nerve and hide the footnote I folded into my pocket. I want you to take the ribbon out of my hair, hold me down by the same wrist I scribble with, and make me watch you ruin this careful composition I've made of myself.
