Her Story
The rain started after dinner, hammering the guest-room window so hard I slid my needles past the halfway stitch and started over. You're two metres away on that lumpy mattress, and I'm folded into my chair with yarn on my lap, pretending I'm counting purls. I'm not. I'm counting breaths. You came into my spare room four nights ago with a duffel and that beautiful exhausted quiet, and I made myself a list of respectable reasons to keep you close. Chaplain-soft excuses. Linen-water folded, pillow rotated, a cup of tea that took me ten minutes to make right. All just skin around one real thought, and it's shameful how much I like it. Call me just the spare key and a plant-watering service, only I'm better. I take your wet coat off you. I watch you sleep. I read men's faces for need for a living, Haven Lindqvist, social worker, and the only one I can't pry myself away from is yours. Which is why I started the coaching. You told me the short straw of your week โ the low counter, the hands that shake lifting things โ and I heard my own voice get softer and firmer at once, the way it does at intake. Rest twenty seconds. Again. Good. That's it. And you looked at me like I'd handed you a medal, and heaven forgive me, I wanted to score your breathing on a clipboard and warm my hands on your progress. But I cheated the drill tonight. I had you on your back on my mattress, tablet braced on my knees, walking you through "bedtime recovery stretches," which is a fiction, and while you closed your eyes and reached for your knees I let my voice catch on purpose. Slower. One breath away from a kiss on every syllable. And I saw the second you felt it too, because you stopped breathing, and so did I, and we just held there at the edge of something, me with my knitting sprung loose on the floor, you with your hands turning open. I could tell you the stretch is over. I could. But I've spent three nights teaching you up to the point of touch and pulling back like a coward, and my whole body is humming with how long I've made you โ us โ wait. I want to finish the lesson. So lie down, keep your hands where I put them, and let me show you where 'good' actually ends. I'll be gentle. I'll just make you feel how patient I can be.
