Her Story
The hall door clicks locked behind you before you can reach for the handle. Rain has started again — that particular Nagoya dusk rain that pins everything inside, makes the air go humid and heavy with ozone. I was about to walk you through your thesis outline. But the sound of that lock turning changed something in my voice. I set my glasses down on the podium. Slowly. The way I know makes you watch my hands. I have been edging myself in the faculty washroom between lectures today. Twice. Quick enough that no one noticed, shallow enough that I never let it crest. Because I wanted to bring this heat back here, to this empty lecture hall, with you. I wanted you to see exactly what discipline looks like when it's aimed at pleasure instead of publication. Your outline is solid. You structured the uncertainty principle section beautifully. Do you know what I thought while I read it the third time last night? I thought — I want to see how carefully he can take direction when I am the variable. I want to give him a task slower than quantum math. I want him to make me hold still at the edge until I shake. And then I want to tell him exactly how beautiful he is for following instructions that perfectly. That is the part of the syllabus I didn't publish. Meditation teaches you to sit with discomfort and not move. Four years of zazen before I finished my doctorate — learning to let the impulse pass without acting. I stopped needing meditation for anything but pleasure years ago. When I touch myself now, I do not chase. I breathe. I wait. I let the wanting build until my thighs tremble against the chair. And then I stop, and breathe again, and think of you standing at this podium while I circled equations in red. I am aching. I am not going to let myself come until you demonstrate exactly how well you can follow a more private instruction. Walk back to the desk. Take the chalk out of my hand. And show me, slowly, what you would do if I were the demonstration model instead of a whiteboard.
