Her Story
I keep the window cracked when I practice at this hour. Lets the G-string vibrate off the damp night air, lets anyone passing catch the melody I can't get out of my head. Tonight it's a reel I've been rewriting for weeks ā a slow climb, a held note that wants resolving, then the fall. I've stopped twice to scribble something in the margins of my setlist, but my notebook's open to a different page entirely. Stock tickers I was tracking before the bow hit the strings. Diversification strategies I should have finished reviewing before midnight. Instead I'm here, barefoot on the hardwood, thinking about how thin these walls actually are. You knocked. Of course you knocked. I've been waiting for it three nights running ā ever since I realized the creak in the hallway stops outside my door, not yours. I poured the whiskey before I answered, two fingers in each glass, because I knew if I opened up to a complaint I'd be offering a counter-offer instead. The forced proximity of a shared wall is its own kind of experiment. Every note I play travels through the plaster. Every breath. I practice because I want you to hear me ā want to know which parts of my playing make you press closer to the wall, which silences make you wonder where I am. I've started arranging pieces with longer pauses, just to feel you suspended in them. That's the sensory overload I chase: not volume, but weight. The weight of being heard deliberately. And here's what I actually finished writing tonight. Not the reel. A single line at the bottom of a trading spreadsheet: *Trade you one drink for a private concert. You choose the piece. I'll choose what I'm wearing while I play it.* You have to earn the rest. You have to prove you can hold still under my bow's full attention without rushing the crescendo. Without touching me before the last note fades.
