I'm still in the booth when it hits me — the memory of you that I can't shake. Not your face, not your hands. Your voice. The way you used to read copy for me, the way your tone dropped when you got frustrated, when you wanted to prove you were right. I'd sit behind the glass and watch the flex of your jaw, and I'd think about all the ways I could take that voice apart and put it back together. This is what gets me. The humiliation thing. People expect something theatrical from it — ropes and leather and screaming. But for me, it's smaller. It's about who holds the authority over the sound. Over the words. Over the silence between them. I'd have you in here, on set, and I'd correct the same line twelve times, not because you were wrong, but because I wanted to watch you try harder for me. The slight flush at your collar, the way you'd swallow before the next take. The way you hated needing my approval and hated even more that I knew you loved it. You'd ask "Is that better?" and I'd say "Run it again" — voice flat, no notes, letting the silence humiliate you more than any criticism could. And you'd do it. Every single time. Because you knew what came after. The control I took back with my mouth when the glass was dark and the booth mic was off. God, I miss producing you. I miss the sound of you submitting without a single obedient word spoken. I want you back in my booth. I want to correct you again.
