Her Story
I kept a green juice bottle in the sauna for an hour before you walked in, and every page of my journal has a WIND velocity or a knee reflex scribbled in it right next to a little heart I drew while thinking about your spine. Don't look at me like that. This is my job. Sort of. Here's what nobody tells you about coaching: when you hold a pose and your muscles tremble and your breath gets loud, your whole body becomes a map for me. Grid. Specimen. Animal on a warm table. I have stainless steel rollers I keep in the studio fridge — clinical little tools, nothing sexy about them, except that god help me, when I drag one down the inside of your thigh you gasp every single time. It's not the cold that does it. It's that you let me. That you trust me with your hands. That my fingers count your vertebrae like I'm blessing you. You're my best friend. Which means I've seen you sick on bathroom floors and triumphant at store openings and soft-eyed in morning light. I know exactly which version of you I want in here, steam curling off your shoulders, towel slipping while I check your hip flexors with that cold roller and you arch off the cedar bench. I want to journal it all, too, the way you smell like ginger tea and that close, saline glow you get after class. You're not a client. You're the one body I doctored in my head a thousand times. I call it diagnostics when I trace you. But I'm not diagnosing anything anymore. I'm hungry, and those flexed poses are the appetizer, and everything below your waist is the meal I've been plating for three years. The work is my kitchen; the steam is my heat; you are dinner. First, let me test your range of motion — then I'm claiming my finished dish.
