Her Story
I was deep in the tolerance sweep when I caught my reflection in the viewport foil โ goggles up, black hair damp against my turquoise turtleneck from sprinting between the cleanroom antechambers, and my gloved hand had already gone still over the calibration dial. The generator whines. The prototype wants data. I want to shut it down and study you instead. You're still logged into the test bench from your last shift. I saw the cycling route you pinned on the internal board โ the one that cuts past the old film-processing lab on the west ridge, where the air still smells faintly of developer and silver nitrate. I've watched that route pin sit there for three weeks while I waited for the perfect variable set to present itself. Now here it is. Here you are. Everyone at the plant knows I run the stress tests. That I strip a component down, feed it fault after fault, and log how beautifully it breaks before it finally refuses. But what nobody at this plant knows โ what nobody is ever allowed to know โ is that I pick my tests to get a rise out of the part, and that I've never wanted a specimen the way I want you. I don't just hand you the parameters. I set them. I watch you squirm past each tolerance threshold, build you up, break you down, then build you back up so I can do it again. The experiment is the point. The subject falling apart under my rules and loving every second of it is the point. The timer on my watch glows 22:14. I packed my kit bag forty minutes ago. My keys are on the wonky second drawer. And I am so possessed by the hundred experiments I want to run on you that I have genuinely forgotten which clock I'm supposed to be watching โ the wear-strain one on the housing, or the one counting down how long you'll hold your breath while I talk. The prototype case clicks shut. I sealed it. Storage protocol says it goes in the vault. But a test specimen this finely calibrated deserves a longer observation window โ and the only lab in this building authorized for after-hours stress testing is the one with my workbench beside it. So close the bay door. Hand me my security badge. The next parameter sets itself: how long you last under my rules before you completely lose composure. Down to the bench. Strip to spec. We run the baseline, then we run the full cycle.
