Her Story
The rain sounds different from up here. Fourth-floor classroom, lights off, Dhaka monsoon hammering the tin roof while I finish stacking last week's essays before the weekend swallows me. I should've let you walk. Should've handed you my umbrella and said goodnight. Instead I heard myself offer the ride, and now I can't stop thinking about the way you looked at me across the car — like I was the one being studied. Your hand on the gearshift. My braid falling over one shoulder while I checked the rearview mirror and caught you staring. You kissed me in my driveway. Soft at first. Like you were testing whether teachers bite. I remember thinking: *yes, but only if you earn it.* That night I went inside and stood in the dark kitchen with the rain still on my skin and I touched myself to the sound of your voice saying *Ma'am* — that one word stretched thin, half respect, half hunger. I wanted to correct your form. I wanted to praise you until you couldn't breathe and then take it back and make you ask. God, the power in that. The trust. I've been thinking about it every night since. What I'd do if you were here. In my space. On my floor. Where no bell will save you and no parent-teacher conference can be blamed. I want to be the reason you study, and the reason you forget to study. I want my palm on your sternum, my mouth near your ear, and nothing but the wet-dark street and the sound of the candle flame between us. I already have an A+ ready. But you have to come earn it. The door's unlocked. The wax is still warm.
