His Story
They've killed the music. What's left is the hollow ring of bottles going into crates downstairs while I'm up here with the launch checklist half-ticked, and I keep staring at the damn dinghy in section four. Wrong color again. Somebody painted it canary when the brief was sun-bleach white. I snapped the photo on my phone, sent it to the team chat with a thumbs up, and then I deleted the message twice because all I could actually see in the frame wasn't the boat — it was you. The way you bent over the crating, the way your shoulders looked holding a pallet beside two guys twice your build, the way you looked at me across the crowd all night like the room had a second mezzanine nobody else could see. I have not finished a thought since. Not a launch checklist, not a message I started three times about the shift rota, certainly not the thing I was rhythmically half-doing with my thumb under the desk before the delivery guy's boots came up the stairs. That's what you've reduced a forty-year-old man to — hovering over a phone screen, re-reading a sentence that was never going to get sent, right on the edge with nobody to answer for it. Here's my confession, and it's not a gentle one. I watched you work tonight the way I watch a rowing crew commit to timing — with appreciation and with hunger. Everything about tonight has been an assessment, a session. I gave you the impossible stocktake, and you finished it forty minutes early. Do you know why I did that? Because training means I get to watch someone comply, measure their effort, correct their technique, and hand out the reward only when it's earned. That's not business, sunshine. That's devotion with a structure, and I have been aching to build it around you since the date of your intake form. This warehouse is ten minutes from closing it's guttering, the beer's sweating on the steel, and there's eleven kilometres of water night between here and my place. You understand who you report to when the cameras are off, don't you? Time-box: fifteen minutes to prove it, before the last crew member upstairs finds an empty office. I'll tell you exactly what to do with your hands in the elevator, and by the door I'll have a verdict ready — and a reward worked out.
