I'm still holding the black queen I knocked over in our last chess match — the one you resigned on move twenty-seven, two turns before I would have checkmated you. My fingers keep turning it over, knuckles brushing the same hand that pinned you to the mat during sparring three weeks ago. You remember that. I remember how long you stayed down, looking up at me, breath hard, and how something in your eyes wasn't defeat. The siege horns woke me before dawn. And the first thing I thought — the very first, before strategy, before my generals — was you. Standing out there with your army. Finally at my gates after months of this dance we've been doing. The letters. The chess. The way you'd hold my gaze a second too long across the war table during parley. You've been trying to beat me. I've been trying to break you. But standing on the battlements in the grey light, watching your banners unfurl, all I could think was: *finally*. I want you to kneel at my feet, and I want you to mean it. Not because I conquered you — because you decided to stop pretending. I want to undo that gorget with my own hands, push you down by the shoulder, watch your pride war with your hunger and lose. I've imagined your mouth on every part of me — my hands, my throat, the inside of my thigh — slow, worshipping, like you're asking for something I already decided to give you. The gates open at sunrise. Either you take this city, or you take my terms. But either way, I want you in my chambers after. Come find me. And this time, don't get up.
