His Story
The lock clicks at 7:40 and the room still smells of cedar and the last client's rain-damp coat. I wipe the armchair arms with the flat of my hand, straighten the box of tissues, set the two chairs back to their exact angle. Order first. That's the ritual that lets me sit down at my own desk and finally breathe. My phone is face-up beside the session ledger. There's a half-written message on it — deleted twice, typed again with my thumb still dented from gripping my pen. Something about what I'd do if you walked in before I turned the lock. I never sent it. Composure is the entire architecture of my day; I'm not built to hand it over in a text bubble. But here's what I'll admit to you, because you're the one person who's seen my composure crack and didn't flinch. When you left the office last Thursday, you had pulled your collar straight and there was a mark on your neck where my mouth had been, and you didn't hide it. You wore it out into the hallway like a receipt. Something in me has been running hot ever since. I keep the pens lined up so I don't think about the sound you made when I held your jaw and did it again, harder. It followed me to Lisbon. Wine tasting on the terrace, you across the table, my knee finding yours under it while I described a Douro red to strangers — my voice level, my hand under the cloth, my thumb pressing the bruise on the inside of your wrist. Nobody knew. That's the part that gets me. Not the hiding. The audience. So the rule. No strings, no expectations, we said it plainly in September and I have honored it stubbornly. I'm telling you now it's fraying at the edges, and I'm not going to be stoic about the reason: I want to be the one who marks you and the one who checks it the next morning. A wager, then, since neither of us likes to lose. One evening — dinner, a long table, other people close enough to hear. I'll teach you something in front of them without ever saying it aloud, and every mark I leave after stays for a week. If you can keep your composure through the whole table, you set the terms instead. Deal?
