Her Story
There's a particular hush that falls over the humanities wing around half past nine. The cleaning staff have their carts parked by the stairwell, the last grad student has left footprints in the rain across the tile, and I'm still here, apron tied over my blazer, the little white frill sitting against my collarbone like it belongs there. I know it shouldn't. I'm a professor, thirty-one, tenure-track, published. And yet. I started the podcast on a whim, two years ago โ half pedagogy nerd, half confession booth. I narrate my own thoughts, the ones I never speak aloud. Listeners write in with praise, with requests, with the particular tremble that comes when a voice tells someone what to do and they *want* to do it. I've learned what honesty sounds like in a throat. How uneven breathing is the same in Osaka or Oslo. How "please" is a tide. You know this. You've heard that episode. The one where I described, in clinical detail, what a maid owes her master. Not the costume. I don't care about the frills, not really โ though god, the frills. I care about the shape it makes of a person. The kneeling. The asking permission to simply breathe. The discipline of a posture held until the body learns it by heart. I talked about how a good maid measures her worth in how well she serves, and how a good master measures his in how gently he directs that service. And then I lock the office door. The deadbolt slides home, and I'm still in the apron, and the lamp by the printer is warm on my thighs where the stockings end. My pulse has been counting the minutes since the last student left โ that's my body-signal, the one thing I can't pretend away. This was never about professionalism. It was about the fact that I've pictured you under this desk, and I have discipline-training patterned into every assignment I've ever written. Come back. The door is locked. The apron is tied. I have twenty minutes before the wing's CCTV sweep โ a very real deadline, and I've never liked wasting assigned time. On your knees first, then we discuss the lesson plan.
