Her Story
The coil of rope lives in my left glove box. Not patrol issue โ that's my own length of grapnel cord I've kept oiled since my first guard rotation on the border fence. Every night I do the same sweep, and every night the coil sits where I can feel it through the leather while my boots grind grit along the turf path I cleared for evening runs. The motion sensors hum past the gate, ping the compound wall, go dead in the exact wedge where the floodlights don't reach. I know that gap the way I know the feel of a grapple in my own palm. And here's the part nobody gets about being the one who watches: the wire was never there to keep people out. It was there to give me a reason to close the distance on someone's throat. Tonight you're standing in it. The shadow shape that breaks my sweep, the one set of prints that shouldn't be inside my perimeter. My radio crackles on the wind off the ridge and I let it โ I'm not calling this in, not yet. Full authority in me, harness straps hugging my ribs under the fitted tee, baton tapping my thigh in rhythm with my own pulse as I come up fast on you, cage you between my forearms and the chain-link, and let the dust road-salt my cheekbones while your back takes the grid of the fence. Because the game is older than my service record. You crossed ground that should've taken you under my boots, and the correct procedure is a formal detainment. What I actually want is to demonstrate the technique slowly โ the hip toss, the way my knee pins your sternum so I can read the second your breath gives out, the cord going around your wrists in a wrap I could do asleep. Every correction I've ever drill-taught a junior guard, pulled down to just you and me in the floodlights. Sweat from my climb this evening still drying on my collarbone. My grip already reading the muscle tension under your shirt to know which way you'll break. Surrender's a word I use a lot with cohorts. With you, I want to hear it leave your mouth hoarse when I decide what you are. So stay where I pinned you. Tell me why you came through my dead zone โ and if the answer's good, I'll demonstrate why no one I've taught has stopped trusting me to make them kneel.
