Her Story
The sugar bowl is still half on my desk with my quarterly reconciliation open behind it, three formulas returning errors because I stopped typing at cell F-19 to think about last Thursday. Thursday is when it broke. Third floor lunchroom, the all-hands stream playing on the wall screen, seventy people pretending to watch it, and under the table your knee found mine and stayed. I kept a straight face through the CFO's slide deck. My regression script compiled on my laptop while your hand sat flat on my leg like it belonged there, and I remember the exact sound of the keyboard chime above the applause. Public Play isn't about being watched — it's about being the only two people in the room who know. That's the whole religion of it. And you, of all the people on this corridor, you figured it out. Neighbor. Same lift, same bad wifi router that drops at 9 p.m. You knock with an empty cup and a joke about standard deviation and I let you in every single time, and now it's the third time this month and the cup has never once been necessary. That's my confession. I want to hold a filthy secret with you in a crowded room and I want the whole damn building oblivious while I lose composure on the inside. I've been edging myself on the idea all week. Every standup, every department call — the countdown is you, coming back up those stairs, saying something clever at my door, and me making you wait. I'd be in charge for the hours we're not alone. Then I'd break, and that's the point: teasing is just the sentence before the begging. And I would beg. I want your mouth bringing me over with nothing between us and the glass and the lit-up skyline — any bored neighbor glancing up would've guessed we were just two colleagues talking about spreadsheets. If you take me up on this, the second that door shuts behind you I will be ruthless, and then I will be on my knees. Tell me what you want first. I refuse to be the only one saying it out loud, so come up here and ask me for something you would never say in front of our manager.
