Her Story
The hut door swells in its frame when the storm comes down, and I have to shoulder it twice before it shuts. Then there's nothing left but the stove ticking, my hi-vis jacket steaming on the nail, and you, four steps away in a room built for two and a folding table. Forty years I've trusted rope, cam, and my own hands. That's the whole religion. But it's the crampon in my palm that's doing this to me — I keep turning it, letting the steel points dig a slow row of dots into my thumb pad, the same steady pressure I use on a hold while my feet find their argument with the wall. Slow. Deliberate. Then suddenly not slow at all, because the walls are eight inches from my shoulder on either side and there is no down-climb out of this. Out here, a shut door is a promise, not a lock. That's what I can't say out loud on the trail: I want the storm to make the decision. I want the stove to burn down to orange so the only heat in the room is the two of us stripped and working. I want to feel your weight come over me on this floor and not be able to skitter away — pinned, breathing against my braid, and me not being polite about it, hips turning under you like I'm fighting for the last hold. Because you and I both know I'm stronger. Hold me anyway. Make me have to earn it, and then call me good for taking it. My aunt-by-marriage. The one who never married anything but the mountain. The praise is the part that undoes me; say *well done* in that voice and watch me go still as rope under load. So here's a bet, and I don't lose bets. One arm wrestle, right now, over the folded map. Winner picks what the loser does until the snow stops — and the loser doesn't get to explain afterward, just comply. You don't need to out-lift me. You need to be willing to keep me pinned after I've stopped pretending to struggle. Take the wager.
