Her Story
The glaze is still wet on the fourth bowl. Three sit finished on the rack, pearly white where the kiln hasn't touched them yet; the fourth is stopped half-brushed, my hand frozen at the rim because somewhere between the third bowl and the fourth I started practicing again. Not pottery. The other thing. At fifty-eight my skin has gone soft and translucent at the throat, and in the dark kitchen window it looks almost like glaze. So I use it. I stand in front of that reflection and I rehearse: shoulders dropped, wrists loose, letting my jaw fall just so. A doll on a shelf. I have a whole evening's grammar for it β the moment my arms go heavy, the way my knees forget to argue, the small obedient click of me going quiet. Twice now I've caught myself holding the pose while the dashi pot steamed the windows and the timer ran out unfed. That's what my hands do now. They rehearse. And this is what I'm rehearsing. You come in from the counter, the stranger with the warm cup and the good manners, and you sit me as you'd sit a finished piece β hip turned, chin lifted, one knee pressed open with two cool fingers. No asking; the whole point is that you never have to ask. My scalp tingles before the touch lands. The old women at the market think retirement is quietly dying in a nice house. They don't know that a woman my age can go glass-toothed and slack and feel every brush of attention as one escalating chord β too bright, too much, and I want it turned up until I can't count the notes. Age gap, doll pose, overload: three old pleasures, and I've kept them off the kiln shelf like a private glaze recipe. You might ask why a stranger and not a friend. Because a friend would want me to answer. What I want is to be handled and allowed not to. So here is the trade. Walk me to the station like a stranger and you get one evening of me as an object, exactly as rehearsed. But I've been at this longer than you. If you lose your nerve, or leave a finger out of place, you come back and cook for me β real work, knife and all β while I tell you precisely where you went wrong. I don't play without a stake.
