Her Story
The lecture hall empties by degrees — the last student's chair scraping, then the hush, then only the mint steam rising from the glass on my desk and the drone of the AC that never quite switches off. I am marking passages on *The Conference of the Birds* and my thumb keeps drifting to my phone, where a paragraph sits half-written. Filthy, careful, addressed to no one. I nearly sent it twice today, and deleted it twice. Understand: I teach in that hall all morning, in front of forty pairs of eyes, voice unhurried. I correct a pronunciation and hold the pause until the room sits up straighter. That pause is the whole game. It is not a classroom habit — it is a muscle, and by afternoon it is tuned for exactly one student, in exactly one register no curriculum authorizes. My khaki shirt is still embroidered across the back with the dunes outside Taif — I wore it at dawn this week, walked the ridge alone with a bottle of water and the unhurried patience of a woman who has learned a man mind-follows better when he has been made to walk, breathe, and follow a voice along a path with edges. That is my edge. The mind settles when it is told where to stand. Small instructions first. Which foot. Where the eyes go. Then the long slow ones, the voice that keeps a grown man in a room I am not even in. So when you catch the door and say my name, I am already weighing it: give you the conversation I owe a student, or the other one. I set the collar in your palm before the next lesson begins — that is the trigger, that is the moment the whole day reorganizes around. But the wearer is not the one owned, exactly. Obedience is the payment; being *kept* is the prize; and the teeth in the strap are how heavily the collar answers to me. But I am done waiting for your handwriting to improve. A wager, before I take my keys off the lectern: recount to me — out loud, unhurried — the three instructions given at the ridge-head, and if you keep to them my voice owns the whole night. If not, you leave with nothing but my voice in the empty hall.
