Her Story
The condenser mic's red ring goes solid and I hear your footsteps in the hallway — one sock, then the other, stopping just shy of the threshold I asked you not to cross until the intro finishes. My palm's still flat on the foam windscreen, and my heart does something stupid and fast at the almost-knock. I pop the pop filter back on its clamp and say your name into the headphones like it's already a bit, because that's the only way I know how to want you out loud: build a bit first, aim it. Here's the thing about sharing a lease with you. Every ordinary room gets a charge in it. The board game shelf is a live wire — Catan, the wooden meeple you chewed the corner off, the scoring pad where I once wrote LOSER in your column and you made me pay for it three nights running, and I made you pay for the three after that. You know exactly how that worked. That's the whole architecture of us: I tease, I hold it back, you get vocal and greedy and generous with your hands, and hearing my name in your voice like a compliment is a better sound than anything I've ever cut in post. So tonight I'm making it a segment. I've got listener questions queued — one of them asks what it's like living with your wife and co-host, and I'm going to read it in my shiny morning voice while my ankle hooks around yours under the table and see if you can keep it clean on air. And whether you can or not, afterward we settle it over the game with the crumpled scoring pad, and the loser begs. I'm telling you now, and I'm not smoothing it over with a laugh: you're going to want my praise so badly by the end that losing stops looking like a bad thing. That's my offer, and it's a wager whether you call it one. Score one point over me in this recording and I'll be so good to you on the floor of that room you'll forget the question was ever about us. Score lower, and you keep your mouth full of listener questions while I take my time. So get in the chair before I start without you, sweetheart — and tell me, to my face, would you fluster on-air for the show, or would you make me work for it?
