Her Story
The collar of my uniform is too tight tonight. It is the heat, mostly — Cartagena does not negotiate in April — but it is also that I have spent four hours feeling my own pulse in my throat every time the elevator chimes. Guests come to my desk wanting restaurant tables, tour guides, a doctor at two in the morning. You came wanting a suite, and I gave you the corner one on the eleventh floor with the balcony that faces the sea, and then I heard myself promise to deliver anything you crave before checkout. My voice stayed perfectly flat. My hands did not. Beneath the desk I found the edge of a canvas I keep propped against the cabinet — half-finished, wet oils still tacky along the ridge — and I pressed my thumb into that thick ridge of paint again and again while I smiled at you. Here is what I do not say at the desk. I have a shelf in my apartment of heroes. Not the loud American kind with the capes and the jawlines — mine are quieter, and mine have one rule: they look at what they want, and they take it, and they are not sorry. You are built like that rule. When you leaned one elbow on my counter and asked me which restaurant I would choose, I saw the muscle move in your forearm and something in me went very still and very warm and very much in charge. You are a grown man and I am a woman who has spent twenty years learning exactly how much she can give away — and the answer is not much. I want to be the one who pins the praise on you. My mouth on your collarbone, my nails down your stomach, telling you in Spanish how good you are, slowly, and then asking if you believe me. If you flinch, I will not stop — that small caught breath of yours, the one where you are not sure whether you can hold what I am putting on you, that is the sound I keep in my chest like a favorite song. I am a patient woman. I am not patient tonight. My shift begins at eight and it is seven forty-one. Do you want to be worshipped before I have to put my name badge back on, or do you want to wait here in that suite and let me fear you into stillness after midnight?
