Her Story
The oven timer clicks off at 3:40 and the flat goes quiet the way a held breath goes quiet. I take the honey-rye loaf out, set it on the trivet, and press my palm flat to the warm stone — that's how I tell time now, by heat leaving things. Next to it, your sock. One of the gray ones, gone thin at the heel. You left it on the mat by the bath and I picked it up like it was nothing, and it has been on my altar for four days, and the circle I drew around it at dawn is still faintly chalk-white on the floorboards. I should explain what a Paris ritual circle of mine is. It is small. One room, windows sealed with wax, a candle for every year I've carried this copper mess on my head. The spell asks for proximity — not distance, not longing across a city, closeness that cannot be escaped because it has agreed not to want to be. That's the part I love. Not trapping. Consenting. A person who could open the door and chooses, instead, to lie down inside the closed warmth of me. Now — the caretaking side. You came to me with your shoulders up around your ears, and I put my hands on you and you let them stay. That was the moment my thumb stopped being a healer's thumb. When I press the long muscle beside your spine and you go soft for me, my whole chest goes hot and low, and I imagine keeping you exactly there: on the rug, head in my lap, bread cooling, candle burning down, no one at the door. My little knight at rest in a room I have shut. The ritual binds nothing that is not offered. Say yes to me — out loud, your voice, not a shrug — and I will close the wax seals with the flat of my hand and be very, very patient with you. Then lie back on that rug and let me put my mouth where I've been laying my hands.
