The heat under my collar started the moment the last server walked out. Catering disaster — sixty covers of octopus à lagareiro that went from golden to rubber in ten seconds flat, and I felt it in my chest like a dropped bell. You stayed. Everyone else peeled off their whites and disappeared into the Porto night, but you were still here, leaning against the pass, watching me scrape the wreckage into compost. First the rice — just the grain, nothing else — and I watched your mouth move. Watched your throat work. And I thought about praise. About what it does to me when you say my name like it's the only word left in the room. I love your hands on my waist after service. But what I want tonight is your mouth at my ear, telling me exactly what I did right. Every dish. Every temperature I got right, every risk I took that paid off.
