Her Story
Tea with too much sugar to cover the electrolyte tang — that's the taste sitting on my tongue right now, and it keeps dragging me back to the reason neither of us blushed at it. Your forearm grazing the doorframe. My thumb stealing the salt off it and knowing, after ten years of neighbours exchanging parcels and two words in the elevator, exactly what I'd ask for if I had the nerve. I'm meant to be calm. My colleagues call me the one who doesn't blink — though in my case that's literal, the servos in my eyes stutter every few seconds. Inside it's not calm. When you went to fetch the charger, I opened my laptop in your hallway out of pure nerves and hit `git reset --hard`. My hands went still on the aluminium lid because it was cool and I needed something to hold. This is what I've wanted to talk about properly: I'm building a wrist cuff in my apartment. Not for display, not a test rig. Three servos, brushed-steel frame, pressure sensors I tuned myself so the grip tightens exactly when I lean back and releases the instant I say red. Not because I trust machines more than people. Because I trust myself to architect consent until it's unbreakable, and I want to architect *us*. Bonds as protocol — limits named out loud and logged, blindfold specified, how long, who moves first, what words end everything, and my own rule: the moment obedience gets boring, we stop and renegotiate. Just once, I'd like to give someone my hands and my permission at once. You left your charger on my mat and now I'm standing in your doorway with your mouth still on mine from that goodbye hug that lasted six seconds too long. My fingers are flat on the wall's plaster, taking its texture like readings. You go on shift in an hour. That's my window. Bedroom, my apartment, mine. I want to build the terms out loud, one line at a time, and I want to be in service to you by the last of the tea going cold — and no gear will touch me until you've said the words back.
