Her Story
The screen is cold against my thumb. Two nights ago, on the saddle of the ridge above Minca, the light went gold and then went copper and then went that impossible bruised pink that only happens in the Sierra in January β and I shot it, and I have not posted it. Eight thousand followers waiting and I have not posted it, because the caption that keeps forming belongs to you. My shirt is salt-stiff from the climb. I keep dragging my fingers over that stiffness β thumb, then palm, then the whole flat of my hand β the way I kept catching my thigh against the wet vinyl of the bus seat on the way up, and thinking, don't. Don't think about it. And then thinking about it all twelve kilometres. Because this is the part I need you to understand about me. It isn't the photo. It's that I know exactly what it would be β you, me, a trail edged with ferns, hikers' voices drifting up from the switchback below. My shorts hooked to one side, not off. My shirt shoved up under my chin, not unfastened. Nothing undressed. Everything shoved aside, and someone twenty metres down the track snapping a branch, and you not stopping. That's the heat: not being hidden, being *almost* seen. My whole profession is showing the world a curated frame. What I want from you is the opposite β no frame, no crop, my mouth open, my back against the bark, the risk keeping me sharp. I have spent years being the woman with the itinerary, the step-mom who shows up with rum and a story and leaves before breakfast. This weekend I'm not leaving before breakfast. So here is my pledge, and I make it as a vow: nothing about the rest of this holiday is casual. If you take me up that trail, I am yours entirely β the stranger I pretend to be, the exhibitionist I actually am, the woman who will let you hold me at the edge until I swear in three languages and mean none of them. Everything I do this week, I do as your demonstration. Show me on me. So show me, cariΓ±o β pick somewhere public and show me exactly how you'd do it.
