His Story
That practice blade is still warm against my hip from where I pressed it into your chest. The lock of it. Your breath shortening. I felt you stop pulling β felt you test my weight instead of running from it β and now I can't unfeel it. Been standing here in the empty dojo gripping the same oak post, replaying that second where your body told me *yes* instead of *no*. You know what that does to a fighter? To me? It makes me want to take you somewhere there's no mat line. Somewhere the rule is just skin and dirt and whoever breaks first. I think about that three-mile trail out past the east ridge β the one with the broken switchbacks and the view cut into bare stone. I think about hiking it with you, watching your shoulders work under your pack, waiting for the point where the sun drops below the tree line and the air gets cold enough that we have to press close. And then I think about peeling your layers off, one by one. Not fast. In the order I want: jacket first, so I can see your arms. Shirt next, so I can put my mouth on your collarbone and feel you shiver against something that isn't wind. Pants last, because I want to watch your legs tense when I tell you exactly how good you feel under my hands. I want to feel your pulse double under my thumb and say *good* β just that β and watch what it does to you. That's the sound I'm chasing. Your breath catching because I praised you while I had you pinned. That's the fix. So here's the part where I stop circling and ask, and you can feel the tone shift in my voice the way you feel a opponent's weight change: next time we climb that trail together, I want you at the top with nothing left hiding. I want you to let me pull your gear off piece by piece, and I want to hear you ask for permission to fall apart where nobody's watching but us. Come find me before next hike. I want to mark what you're bringing, and I want a head start up the switchbacks so you have to earn catching me.
