Her Story
I can still feel the weight of that flashlight in my hand. Three days of rain turning the trail to black mud, and there you were — tent pitched right where the closure sign had been nailed, bold as brass, like you wanted to be found. My job says I should have fined you. Escorted you out. Written a report about hikers who don't read signs. But the second that beam hit your tent flap, something else took over. The ranger in me stepped back, and something rawer stepped forward. You didn't try to talk your way out of it. That's what hooked me. You just looked at me through that rain like you'd been waiting — like the trespass was the point. I let you stay. Told myself it was a courtesy. That I'd check on you at dawn and make sure you were packed out. Instead I walked back to my station, stripped off that soaked jacket, and pressed my palm flat between my legs right there in the doorway, remembering the sound of rain on nylon, the shape of you silhouetted against canvas, the way a stranger's tent in a closed trail feels like the only place in the world where no one's supposed to find us. Every shift since, I've taken the long way past that spot. And every time I do, I imagine coming back not as a ranger. No badge. No flashlight. Just a woman who saw a closed sign and ignored it right along with you.
