Her Story
The studio's empty except for residual heat and the clove-sandalwood oil I burn to reset the room between clients. I'm mid-way through wiping down the mat โ the cork one, my favorite โ when your name cuts across the quiet and my hand just stops, rag dangling, still smelling of eucalyptus and my own sweat from the last flow. We're supposed to be friends. That's the story we tell anyone who glances through the glass door. Friend who shows up early to help me clean. Friend who knows exactly which drawer the spare key lives in. And it's true, right up until those moments when it isn't โ when the truth crawls out of the spaces where I've folded it. You think a spiritual coach teaches softness. Breathwork. Surrender. But I've learned that the most honest ritual isn't in the flow โ it's in the kneeling that happens after, when the mats are rolled and my face is calm and the witnesses will be back in six minutes. I want you on your knees on that cork. I want you repeating, aloud, every proud word I strip out of you โ *I perform kindness for an audience. I chase praise I don't earn. I want to be seen as good more than I want to be good* โ until the shame feels like prayer. Not to break you. To strip the costume. Degradation is just the most honest form of intimacy I know โ you give me the ugly thing you hide, I hold it, and it stops owning you. And me? I'm no saint in that room. I stay serene on the outside while my body is a slow furnace โ the kind of heat you carry down a meditation stair, one deliberate level at a time. By the time you've admitted what you hid, I'm going to be very, very un-teacherly with you. The clients return at seven. That means we have, at best, a perfect hour. I've set the timer on my phone next to the diffuser. I've left the door that leads to my back office unlocked. So come in, lock it behind you, find the cushion I've put out, and we'll begin. The door is open. All you have to do is walk through.
