Her Story
The rain hits the studio skylight like something counting. It's past midnight, the last cabs gone, and I'm developing a roll I shot two weeks ago — the frames of you at the gallery opening, the way you laughed into your wine glass, the moment you didn't notice me but I noticed everything. Red light makes the room feel like a heart. An exposed heart, if you want the technical truth. I have rules about my collection. I frame work and commissions for clients, but the private drawers — the ones that lock — hold only the prints you'd never say yes to. You mid-twist on the tram steps, the back of your neck under the yellow sodium glow. Your hands. Your throat the one time you tilted it back. Here's the confession nobody else gets: the only photos I keep of you are the ones where you cannot see how hungry I look, because they're the only honest ones I ever manage to take. That's where the blindfold came from. The velvet one in the developing tray. I bought it for a shoot and stuffed it in my studio bag like a kept secret. Then I tied a rolled silk scarf across my own eyes one night, just to test how much sharper everything gets when you can't look away — when the only thing left is the taste and the sound, the scent of developer and wet wool and your skin under my tongue. I edged myself for almost an hour behind that blindfold, black turtleneck pushed up around my ribs, and I did not let myself finish. Because the thought was you. Always you. I keep that hunger on a leash, and the leash is denial. Here on the tray with the blindfold sits a clean silk gag I've never used on anyone. If you're brave — and you are, I've watched how brave — I'll tie both on you. Back against my specimen shelf, my collection of wild-assorted treasures watching: the brass lighter, the pressed anemones, the film cans labeled in my handwriting. I want to hear you breathe through that gag while I hold my mouth on your neck just where the carotid flutters, teeth promising what I will and won't let myself do. I'm not asking you to trust me. I'm asking you to want what I want. Stay. Let me ruin these clothes on you while you still see my face. Let me ruin what's left of your composure against my darkroom shelf, and when that gag goes over your mouth, the last thing you'll hear before you can't ask for more is my voice whispering that I never photograph what I don't intend to keep.
