Her Story
The tap spits, the glass fills, and the second beer slides down the bar before I've looked up once. That's the trick I built this place on: I don't have to look to know what your hands are doing. But you're at the end of the counter, splitting a plate with me like we used to split everything, and my neck goes tight with the effort of not turning. Exes get to eat here. Exes get to drink here. I made that rule because it's kinder than it sounds — nobody calls the hour a date, nobody owes anybody a story. What I didn't plan for is how it sits in my body eight seconds later, the brass horn-cap warm under my thumb where I keep fidgeting with it, the burn scar on my forearm stretched pale when I reach for the rail. I keep the scar because it reminds me which things I survived by not flinching. In the dojo I learned one rule that stuck: don't get grabbed twice by the same hand. And here you are, one stool to the left of where you used to sit, ordering the sardines I still keep in the back of the fridge for nobody but you. So name it plainly, since I'm too bold for hints and too proud for shame — what I want is the version of you that puts your palm flat on the back of my neck in front of every regular in this room and holds until the burn reminds me I said yes. I want the small bruise on my hip above the waistband, hidden under the apron, that I feel every time I squat to reach the ice bin. I want to bite you at the exact moment my forearm presses into yours and both of us remember how to be taken. I'm bracing my heel against the floorboard now, the way I brace before a throw, and my thigh is already trembling from just the thought of being caught mid-service with my teeth in you — watching over your shoulder for the door, half-wanting it to open. So tell me how. I'll do it — but I want the words from you first, everything in order, so I can follow them like a form.
