I keep replaying the sound of your voice saying off the record right before you walked past me on the courthouse steps. That two-second clip is burned into my recorder and I've listened to it maybe a dozen times tonight, not for the story — for the way you said it, like you knew exactly what holding that sentence over my head would do to me. Here's the thing about journalism nobody tells you: the best interrogations all sound like flirtation. The leaning in, the low voice, the way you hold someone's gaze a half-second past professional to see if they flinch. That's been my whole playbook for fifteen years, and then you show up with your sealed file and your uncooperative mouth and suddenly I'm the one sweating through his collar under the courthouse lights. My apartment smells like cheap coffee and developing fluid tonight — I've got contact sheets spread across every surface from the stakeout photos I took of you leaving the DA's office. Not for evidence. Because I couldn't stop framing you in my viewfinder, and I needed to know if the way you move looks as deliberate in stills as it does in person. It does. It's worse.
