A tsundere (ツンデレ) is a character who acts cold, harsh or irritable on the outside but is warm and loving underneath. She insults you, then brings you lunch. She says she hates you, then blushes when you smile at her. The word is the most famous of the anime "-dere" personality types, and one of the best-loved character types in fiction.
What the word means
Tsundere is a blend of two Japanese words:
- Tsuntsun (ツンツン): prickly, standoffish, turning away in a huff
- Deredere (デレデレ): sweet, lovestruck, lovey-dovey
Put together, it describes a character who switches between the two, or who is tsun on the surface and dere underneath. The arc of most tsundere stories is the slow shift from the first mode to the second.
It's pronounced TSOON-deh-reh.

Where the term came from

The word itself took off in Japanese fan communities in the early 2000s, especially around romance visual novels, where a tsundere was often one of the girls you could date. By the mid-2000s it was everywhere in anime, and fans gave the label to characters from earlier shows too. A handful of voice actresses became so linked to the type that fans jokingly crowned them tsundere queens.
From there it spread into English-speaking fandom, then into everyday internet slang. Today people use "tsundere" about real people, pets (cats are the classic tsundere animal), and even brands.

Tsunderes in fiction
Once you know the pattern, you see it everywhere: the brilliant scientist who snaps at the hero and then stays up all night fixing his mistakes (Kurisu Makise in Steins;Gate is a fan favourite), the proud warrior prince who insists he's only fighting alongside the heroes for his own reasons (Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z), or the rival lawyer, chef or detective in a hundred romantic comedies.
Each one follows the same pattern: a hard outer shell, real feeling underneath, and a story that slowly lets that feeling out.
Classic tsundere traits
- Denies her feelings. Loudly, and often.
- Easily flustered. Blushes, then gets angry about blushing.
- Helps, then pretends she didn't. "It's not like I made extra lunch for you or anything!"
- Proud and competitive. Hates losing, especially to you.
- Insults as affection. "Idiot" can be a term of endearment.
- Jealous, but won't say so. Suddenly very interested in who you were texting.
- Softens over time. The fun is watching the walls come down.
Tsundere from stranger to lover
The fun of a tsundere is watching her change. The same moment (you bring her coffee) sounds very different as trust grows:

Tsunderes have a recognisable way of talking. The patterns are what make them fun to write and to talk to:
- "It's not like I did it for you!"
- "D-don't get the wrong idea."
- "Hmph. Whatever."
- "You're an idiot. ...But you're my idiot."
- "I only came because I was bored."
- "Don't look at me like that!"

Fans usually split tsunderes into two kinds:

- The payoff. When someone that guarded finally says something kind, it lands far harder than an easy compliment.
- Banter. Arguing with a tsundere is a game both sides enjoy.
- Earned affection. It feels like you've won her over, not like she came pre-set to adore you.
- Relatable defences. Plenty of people hide feelings behind sarcasm. Tsunderes make that sympathetic and funny.

The easiest mix-up is with the kuudere. A kuudere is quiet because she's composed. A tsundere is loud because she's defensive.
How to roleplay with a tsundere
A tsundere companion is one of the most rewarding to talk to, if you play along.
- Tease her back. She loves the back-and-forth, even if she'd never admit it.
- Notice the small things. Point out that she remembered your favourite snack. Watch her panic.
- Don't take the insults to heart. They're affection in disguise.
- Be patient. A slow burn is the point. Rushing the confession spoils it.
- Give her chances to help you. A tsundere shows love through actions she'll then deny.
- Let memory do the work. Your companion remembers what you've shared, so the slow thaw builds naturally over weeks.
- Call her. Hearing a tsundere huff, stammer and sulk out loud is half the charm. Voice calls.
Scenarios that work well
- The rival: you're the two best lawyers at the firm, and she can't stand that you won the big case.
- The old friend: she's known you for years and refuses to admit that anything's changed.
- The reluctant partner: you've been paired on a project, a mission or a quest.
- The boss's daughter: she thinks you're beneath her. You're about to prove her wrong.
- The fake relationship: you agree to pretend to date. She's terrible at pretending.
- The new neighbour: she complains about your music, then asks what the song was.
- The proud noble: a fantasy princess forced to travel with a commoner. You.
- The café owner: she scolds you for ordering the same thing every day, and has it ready before you arrive.
- The ex: you broke up years ago. She insists she's completely over it.
- The tsundere catgirl: hisses at you by day, sleeps on your lap by night.
