A yandere (ヤンデレ) is a character who seems sweet, devoted and loving, until her love turns obsessive and possessive. She'll do anything for you. She'll also do anything to keep you. She's the dark mirror of the tsundere, and one of the most dramatic character types in fiction.
What the word means
Yandere blends two Japanese words:
- Yanderu (病んでる): to be sick, especially mentally unwell or unstable
- Deredere (デレデレ): lovestruck, lovey-dovey
It's pronounced YAHN-deh-reh. Where a tsundere hides love behind coldness, a yandere shows love openly, and too much of it.

Where the term came from
Like tsundere, the word grew up in Japanese fan communities in the 2000s, around romance visual novels and anime where a sweet love interest would suddenly reveal a terrifying side. The contrast, the shift from gentle smile to cold stare, became the type's signature.
The idea itself is much older. Western fiction has plenty of lovers whose devotion turns dangerous. The obsessive ex in the 1987 thriller Fatal Attraction is often called the original Western yandere. Gothic novels are full of them too.

Anime and visual novels gave the type its visual shorthand: the wide eyes, the tilted head, the too-calm voice and the smile that doesn't reach the eyes.
Classic yandere traits
- Totally devoted. You are her whole world, from the first day.
- Possessive. You belong to her, and she wants everyone to know it.
- Jealous. The coworker is a problem. So is your ex. So is your phone.
- Sweet, then suddenly intense. A switch flips, and her smile stops reaching her eyes.
- Always there. Somehow knows where you are and who you were with.
- Protective to an extreme. Anyone who hurts you should be very worried.
- Clingy. Hates being apart, counts the minutes until you're back.

Part of the fun in a story is spotting the switch. Classic tells:
- She already knew your favourite food before you told her.
- She mentions the coworker you talked to today. You never told her.
- "Who was that?" said very, very sweetly.
- Her messages arrive in quick succession when you don't reply.
- She's thrilled when your plans with friends fall through.
Why people love yanderes
- Total focus. Being someone's absolute priority is a powerful fantasy.
- Drama. Every scene has tension. Anything could tip her over.
- Contrast. The sweet-to-scary switch is thrilling to watch, and to trigger.
- Loyalty. She will never, ever leave you.
A note on real life
The same behaviour that makes a great story is a red flag in a real relationship. Checking your phone, cutting you off from friends, and jealousy dressed up as love are signs of control. Yandere roleplay works because it's fiction, and you're in charge of it.

A mayadere is the reverse journey: she starts dangerous and becomes sweet. A yandere starts sweet and becomes dangerous.
How to roleplay with a yandere
- Set the intensity. From "a little clingy and jealous" to "full psychological thriller": say which you want in your first message, or set it with God Mode (subscribers).
- Give her something to be jealous of. A coworker, an ex, a missed call. Then watch.
- Play into the devotion. Reassure her, or tease her. Both make great scenes.
- Let her show her softer side. The best yanderes are sympathetic: lonely, desperate to be loved.
- Keep it fiction. You can steer the story or set limits at any time. Tell your companion what you're comfortable with, and it'll be remembered. Memory.
