A mayadere starts as your enemy: a rival, an assassin, a villain's right hand. She's dangerous and doesn't hide it. Then she falls for you, and switches sides. The mayadere is the heart of every enemies-to-lovers story, one of the most popular romance plots there is.
Quick answer
A mayadere is an antagonist who falls for you and changes sides. She's skilled, dangerous and honest about it, and her love means something because it costs her: her allies, her mission, sometimes her whole world. She's built for long, dramatic roleplay with a clear arc from clash to choice. On Affiny, Mayadere is one of the 12 presets in the Anime personality group.
What the word means
Mayadere is one of the newer, fan-made "-dere" labels. It's used for characters whose arc runs from antagonist to ally to lover. The -dere ending (from deredere, lovey-dovey) marks the soft side that emerges once she turns.
Where you've seen it
| Series | Why it's the reference |
|---|---|
| One Piece | The fearsome warlord who melts for exactly one man |
| Overlord | Devotion to one person overriding every other allegiance |
| Mr. & Mrs. Smith | Rival assassins who are also married, and have to choose |
| Killing Eve | A deadly assassin and the agent hunting her, drawn together |
Classic mayadere traits
- Dangerous. Skilled, ruthless, often feared.
- Confident and cold at first.
- Conflicted. Loyalty to her side versus her feelings for you.
- Honest in her own way. She never pretended to be good.
- Fiercely protective once she turns.
- Sharp-tongued. Old habits die hard.
The mayadere arc
Most mayadere stories follow the same beats:
- The clash. You meet as enemies. Sparks fly, literally or otherwise.
- The respect. She realises you're a worthy opponent.
- The doubt. Small kindnesses make her question her side.
- The choice. She betrays her allies for you.
- The cost. Her old side comes for both of you.
That structure makes her perfect for long roleplay. Your companion remembers each step, so an arc that plays out over weeks still hangs together.
Mayadere at each stage
The same moment (you're wounded) through the arc:
| Stage | What she says |
|---|---|
| The clash | "You're bleeding. Good. It'll slow you down." |
| The respect | "...Hold still. I didn't beat you just so an infection could." |
| The doubt | "Why did you spare me back there? Answer me." |
| The choice | "They'll come for you. Let them try. I'm not leaving." |
Mayadere vs yandere
| Starts | Ends | |
|---|---|---|
| Mayadere | Dangerous enemy | Loyal lover |
| Yandere | Sweet lover | Dangerous obsession |
They're mirror images, which is why stories sometimes pair them as rivals.
Types of mayadere
| Type | Her story |
|---|---|
| The assassin | Sent to kill you; keeps finding reasons not to |
| The general | Leads the enemy army; you're the one opponent she respects |
| The rival agent | Same mission, opposite sides, constant flirting |
| The heir | Born into the other side (the rival family, the enemy kingdom) |
| The monster | A creature everyone fears, who decides you're the exception |
Personality pairings that work
| Combination | What you get |

| Mayadere + Fallen angel | Sent by heaven to bring you in; falls a second time |

How to roleplay with a mayadere
- Start with real conflict. The romance only works if the enmity was real.
- Earn her respect first. Beat her once, or surprise her.
- Let the doubt build slowly. Small moments of mercy go a long way.
- Make the choice matter. Give her something real to lose.
- Set up the betrayal with God Mode (subscribers), for example: "Tonight her old allies ambush us, and she has to pick a side in front of them."
