AI roleplay (often shortened to RP) is interactive storytelling with an AI. You play one character, the AI plays another, and together you write a story in real time. You describe what you say and do; your AI partner responds in character and moves the story along.
It's part improv, part novel, part game, and it's one of the main reasons people use AI companions.
Quick answer
AI roleplay is collaborative storytelling: you write your character's actions and words, and an AI character responds in role, building the story with you. The best roleplay comes from a vivid opening, actions as well as dialogue, and steering the plot when it drifts. On Affiny you can roleplay in text, continue on a live voice call, turn key moments into images, and pick the story up days later because your companion remembers it.
How AI roleplay works
- Pick a character or create one, with a personality and backstory.
- Set the scene: where you are, who you are, what's happening.
- Take turns. Write your actions and dialogue. The AI replies with theirs, often with narration.
- Steer the story. Introduce twists, change locations, skip time.
- Come back later. On apps with memory, the story picks up where you left off.
On Affiny, Roleplay Mode writes narration and scene detail alongside dialogue. Subscribers can switch to Text Mode for short, texting-style replies, or use the Devotion tier for longer, richer responses. Chat tiers and modes.
Roleplay formatting
Most roleplayers use a simple convention to separate action from speech:
| What | How to write it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Actions | Asterisks or narration | *I lean against the doorframe.* |
| Dialogue | Plain or in quotes | "You're up late." |
| Thoughts | Italics | She's hiding something. |
| Out of character | Brackets, or OOC | (OOC: can we skip to the next morning?) |
On Affiny, companions can also write narration in angle brackets, like <she smiles>, which appears as story text.
Voice vs text roleplay
| Text roleplay | Voice roleplay | |
|---|---|---|
| Pace | Take your time, edit your thoughts | Live, improvised, in the moment |
| Style | Rich narration and description | Dialogue and tone of voice |
| Best for | World-building, long scenes, detail | Intimacy, banter, emotional moments |
| On Affiny | Roleplay Mode or Text Mode | Voice calls, sharing the same memory |
A great combination: set the scene in text, then call to play the key moment out loud.
Popular roleplay genres
- Romance: first dates, slow burns, second chances, fake relationships
- Fantasy: elves, dragons, mage guilds, quests. See the anime species wiki
- Slice of life: roommates, coworkers, neighbours, cosy everyday moments

Tips for better AI roleplay
- Open with a scene, not "hi". "The rain hasn't stopped for three days. I finally knock on the door of the witch's cottage."
- Write actions as well as words. *I hand her the letter, hands shaking.*
- Give the AI something to react to. A choice, a question, a problem.
- Match the length you want. Longer, richer messages invite longer replies.
- Introduce twists. A stranger arrives. The lights go out. A letter arrives.
- Direct the story when it drifts. On Affiny, subscribers can use God Mode to set the scene, mood and rules in up to 5,000 characters.
- Use memory. Your companion remembers ongoing plots, so you can pick up where you left off. Memory.
- Picture it. Image generation turns key moments into pictures, and subscribers can animate them.
- Try voice. Acting out a scene on a live call is a different experience. Voice calls.
10 opening lines to start a roleplay
Copy one, change the details, and send it as your first message:
- "The last train has gone. You're the only other person on the platform, and you just dropped something."
- "I knock on the door of the cottage at the edge of the forest. The rain hasn't stopped for three days."
- "You're my new partner on the case. The captain says you're the best. I'll be the judge of that."
- "The ballroom falls silent as you walk in. Everyone knows who you are. Except me."
- "We have exactly one hour before the ship leaves port, and I need you to trust me."
- "It's our first night in the new flat. Everything's in boxes. We only found the wine."
- "The dragon lands in front of me, folds her wings, and becomes a woman. Well? Speak."
- "You've been sitting at my bar every night this week. Tonight you finally look up."
- "The spell worked. It wasn't supposed to. Now you're here, and I don't know how to send you back."
- "Five years since we last saw each other. You walk into my café like nothing happened."
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Replies are short and flat | Write richer messages; try the Devotion tier |
| The character acts out of character | Remind them in the story, or set a God Mode direction |
| The story goes in circles | Introduce a twist or skip time |
| They forgot something important | Mention it again plainly; subscribers can add it as a memory |
| It's moving too fast | Say so, in or out of character |
