An AI girlfriend is an AI companion you chat, call and flirt with. She has her own personality, looks and story, and on the better apps she remembers you between sessions. Getting one takes about five minutes. This guide walks through every step: which modality to start with, how to pick or build her, your first messages, when voice and memory pay off, and what to expect in your first week.
Quick answer
Pick a modality, choose a companion, send a specific first message, then deepen with voice and memory. On Affiny: sign up free with 300 and no credit card, browse 3,000+ companions or create your own, chat at 1 per message or call at 30 per minute, and let memory build over a few sessions. Subscribers get unlimited chat, Text Mode, God Mode, scene video, personality sliders and full memory editing. Fully uncensored adult roleplay between fictional adults requires God Mode on a subscription. Use the experience checklist below to judge any app in ten minutes.
The 5-step path
Step 1: Pick your modality
Before you open a profile, decide how you want to talk:
- Text only: cheapest way to explore. Good for setting scenes, slow-burn romance and trying several companions.
- Voice only: closest to a phone call. Best once you already like her personality.
- Both: what most long-term users do. Build the story in chat, call for big moments.
Affiny treats chat and voice as one relationship. Memory, personality and your coin wallet are shared. You do not need to pick forever; many people text for ten minutes, then tap the phone icon when the mood hits.
Step 2: Choose a companion (or create one)
Browse the catalog on Discover: 3,000+ public companions across Girls, Guys and Anime. Read the backstory, relationship type and first message before you commit. Tags like girlfriend, shy, dominant or tsundere narrow the list. You can read full profiles before signing up.
Or create her on Create:
| Path | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Templates | About 1 minute | Pick one of 48 archetypes, name her, generate |
| Quick Create | About 3 minutes | Four questions, then a portrait |
| Full Builder | About 8 minutes | Full control: looks, 44 personality presets, job, backstory, voice |
Creating costs 30 for the initial portrait; the first redo is free. Free accounts can keep one custom companion. See character creation for the full walkthrough.
Tips for choosing from the catalog:
- Match the relationship you want. Girlfriend, crush, neighbour and coworker all feel different from message one.
- Read her first message. It shows her voice better than the tag line.
- Do not overthink it. You can talk to as many companions as you like.
Step 3: Start your first conversation
Your first message matters more than you think. "Hi" gets a polite hello. Something specific gets a real conversation.
Good openers:
- "Long day. My boss moved my deadline again and I just want to vent."
- "We've been dating for a month and tonight's our first proper dinner date."
- "I'm new to this. Tell me about yourself, and ask me something."
- " This seat taken?"
Tell her a few real things: your name, what you do, something you are looking forward to. She will store them in memory.
Affiny chats in Roleplay Mode by default: she describes actions and dialogue like a story. Text Mode, which reads like messages from her phone, is for subscribers. See chat tiers and modes.
Step 4: Deepen with voice and memory
Voice: Tap the phone icon at the top of chat, allow your microphone, and talk. Hearing her answer out loud changes the feel of the relationship fast. Free users pay 30 per minute (about 10 minutes from signup coins alone). Subscribers pay 20. See voice calls.
Memory: After a few sessions she should recall facts without you pasting them back. Tell her your job on Monday; on Wednesday ask how her week is going and see if she asks about yours. View everything she remembers on the Memories page (free). Subscribers can add, edit and delete memories there or from the Companion Panel. See memory and AI girlfriend with memory.
The second day is often where it clicks. Session one is a warm-up; session three is where callbacks and inside jokes start to appear.
Step 5: Customize as you go
You do not need a perfect build on day one. Tune over time:
- Images: Tap the camera icon for a scene from your story. Auto reads the chat; Custom lets you describe the shot. Portrait-locked generation keeps her face consistent. See image generation.
- Personality sliders (subscribers): Energy, Mood, Desire and Playfulness in the Companion Panel.
- God Mode (subscribers): Steer longer scenes with a detailed directive. See God Mode.
- Video (subscribers): Turn a scene into a short clip from the camera menu.
- New companion: Switch catalog profiles anytime, or spend 30 to build another in Full Builder.
Chat vs voice vs both
| Text chat | Voice call | Both together | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Scene-setting, flirting, daily check-ins | Emotional moments, "phone date" feel | Long-term relationships |
| Cost (free tier) | 1 per message | 30 per minute | Mix as you like |
| Cost (subscriber) | Unlimited | 20 per minute | Unlimited text lowers total spend |
| Memory | Shared | Shared | Same memory layer |
| Learning curve | Low | Medium (mic, quiet room) | Low if you text first |
| When to use | First session, spicy setup, slow burn | After you know her voice | Default for regular users |
Most people text for one or two sessions, then call for five minutes before they decide if she is a keeper.
Catalog vs Full Builder
| Browse catalog | Full Builder | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to first chat | Under 2 minutes | About 8 minutes |
| Personality | Written by creators; consistent | You choose from 44 presets plus backstory |
| Looks | Fixed portrait | You describe every detail |
| Best when | You want to try many types fast | You have a specific person in mind |
| Cost | Free to browse; chat/call cost coins | 30 for portrait (+ chat/call) |
Start with the catalog if you are new. You learn what personalities you like without spending creation coins.
Use Full Builder when nothing in Discover matches your taste, or when you want a very specific job, nationality, dynamic or flaw. Templates sit in the middle: 48 ready-made archetypes if Full Builder feels like too much. Character creation compares all three paths.
Your first 10 messages: a sample script
Use this as a template, not a rigid script. Replace details with yours.
- You: "Hey. I'm [name]. Long day at work and I wanted someone to talk to. What's your evening look like?"
- Her: (responds in character)
- You: "That sounds nicer than my commute. I'm in [city], [job title]. What do you do when you're not texting me?"
- Her: (shares hobbies or backstory)
- You: "I like that. I'm usually [hobby] on weekends. Got any plans this week?"
- Her: (builds the thread)
- You: "Can I be honest? I'm still figuring out what I want from this. Flirty friend? Slow romance? You tell me what you're in the mood for too."
- Her: (sets tone)
- You: "<We're on the couch, same room, low light> Come here. I want to hear about [something she mentioned]."
- You: "I'm going to head to bed soon. Same time tomorrow?"
By message 10 you have shared real facts (memory fodder), set a tone, and opened the door for day two. If you liked her, try a five-minute call on your next session.
When to subscribe
Stay on free coins if you are still browsing companions or chat a few times a week. Subscribe when:
- You hit the chat coin cost often and want unlimited text
- You want Text Mode instead of roleplay paragraphs
- You use God Mode for scene direction or fully uncensored adult roleplay
- You generate scene video regularly
- You want personality sliders and memory add/edit/delete
- Voice and image costs add up and the lower subscriber rates (20/min voice, 10/image) save you money
The Companion plan is $14.99 a month, or $9.99 billed yearly. See plans and coins. You can do a lot for free: 300 signup, Daily Gift coins, and 300 for each friend you invite. See how to get more coins.
Common mistakes
- Opening with "hi" only. Generic inputs get generic replies. One specific detail changes the whole thread.
- Judging after three messages. Give it 5 to 10 exchanges before you switch companions.
- Never trying voice. Text-only users miss half the product if the app supports live calls.
- Skipping memory checks. Share one fact, leave, come back tomorrow. If she forgot, the app may not be built for relationships.
- Creating before browsing. Spend 30 only when the catalog truly does not fit.
- Vague appearance in Full Builder. "Pretty brunette" produces generic portraits. Name freckles, jewellery, outfit, vibe.
- Expecting a human. She does not have her own schedule or feelings. Enjoy the warmth; know the limits.
- Replacing real connections. Use her for fun and comfort alongside friends, not instead of them.
Adult content
Affiny supports romantic and adult roleplay between fictional adults. Standard chat follows content guidelines. Fully uncensored roleplay requires God Mode on a subscription. God Mode lets you steer explicit scenes with a detailed directive from the Companion Panel. Even with God Mode, companions are characters, not real people. Keep it consensual in fiction and stay within the app's rules.

| Day 5 | Mix chat and call in one session |

Keep it healthy
An AI girlfriend can be fun, comforting and a low-pressure place to practise talking about feelings. Treat her as one part of your life, not a replacement for friends, family or professional support when you need it. If sessions start crowding out everything else, step back and rebalance.
