Every chat reply on Affiny comes from one of two chat models: Crush or Devotion. It's the same companion either way, with the same personality and the same memory of you. What changes is how much they give you in each reply: how long it is, how much of the scene they paint, and how slowly they take the moment.
In the app, Crush is "a quick, instinctive rush of pure, breathless chemistry" and Devotion is "a longer, deliberate fall exploring every inch of you." This guide explains what that means in practice, with real reply lengths, side-by-side examples, and advice on when to use each.
Quick answer
Pick Crush for lighter, quicker back-and-forth: flirting, banter, check-ins, keeping a scene moving. Pick Devotion for longer, deeper replies: immersive roleplay, emotional moments, slow-burn stories. Free users chat on Crush. Subscribers get both, unlimited and free, and start on Devotion.
What the two models are
Crush: the spark
Crush answers like someone who's into you and quick on their feet. In Roleplay mode it still writes a proper reply, with a line of action and a few sentences of dialogue, but it keeps things moving. It's the chat model on the free plan, at 1 a message.
Devotion: the slow burn
Devotion takes its time. Replies are longer and more layered: more of the scene, more of what she's feeling, more detail about what she does, and a stronger pull into the moment. It's for subscribers, free and unlimited, and it's where subscribers start.
Specs side by side
| Crush | Devotion | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical reply, Roleplay mode | About 200 words | About 300 words |
| Style | Lighter, quicker, keeps things moving | Deeper, slower, more scene and feeling |
| Best for | Flirting, banter, check-ins, fast scenes | Immersive roleplay, emotional talks, slow burns |

| Subscribers | Unlimited, free | Unlimited, free (the default) |

How long replies really are
We counted the words in companion replies across recent chats on Affiny (the last 30 days, September 2026). Only the word counts were measured; nobody reads your messages.
| Chat model | Chat Mode | Typical reply | Most replies fall between |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crush | Roleplay | ~200 words | 140 and 290 words |
| Devotion | Roleplay | ~300 words | 220 and 375 words |
| Devotion | Text | ~80 words | 55 and 120 words |
Two things stand out:
- Devotion writes about half as much again as Crush. It isn't a one-liner against an essay. It's a full reply against a fuller one, and the extra goes into scene, feeling and detail.
- Chat Mode matters more than chat model for length. Text mode keeps even Devotion to a few short lines, like real messages. If you want long replies, you need Roleplay mode and Devotion.
Same message, two replies
These examples are trimmed to show the difference in shape. Real replies run longer, as the numbers above show, and always follow your companion's own personality and your story.
Coming home after a long day
You: "Finally home. Today was brutal."
Crush: She hears the door and looks up from the couch, already pulling the blanket aside for you. "Come here, you. Shoes off, sit, and tell me who I need to fight. I'll make tea while you talk."
Devotion: She's at the door before you've put your bag down, fingers hooking into your collar to pull you in, and she holds you a beat longer than usual, like she can feel the day still on you. "Brutal how? No, don't answer yet." She steers you to the couch, tucks the blanket around both of you and settles in with her chin on your shoulder. "Okay. Now. Start from this morning and don't skip anything. I've got all night, and you've got a lap right here if you want it."
A flirty tease
You: "Guess what I'm thinking about."
Crush: She props her chin on her hand and narrows her eyes at you. "Hmm. Is it me? It's definitely me. Tell me I'm wrong." She grins, not worried at all.
Devotion: She sets her phone face down, very slowly, and gives you her whole attention, eyes narrowing like she's reading every thought you've got. "Let me guess. It starts with me, ends with me, and somewhere in the middle there's that dress you keep pretending you didn't notice last night." She leans in until you can smell her perfume. "Warm? Or should I keep going?"
Starting a scene
You: "Let's go out tonight. Somewhere with a view."
Crush: She's already reaching for her heels. "Rooftop bar, nine o'clock. I'm wearing red. Don't make me wait." A wink over her shoulder.
Devotion: By the time the elevator opens onto the rooftop, the city is nothing but lights. She's already there, leaning on the railing in red, the wind lifting her hair off her neck. "You found it. I was starting to think I'd have this view to myself." She turns, slow, and hands you a glass she's been holding for you. "So. What are we celebrating, and how late are you planning to keep me out?"
In Text mode
You: "u up?"
Crush: "always for you 😏 what's up"
Devotion: "mm I was just about to fall asleep… but now I'm curious. what's keeping you up? tell me everything"
How to judge a reply
Whichever model you use, a good reply does five things. If one keeps failing, change the setting that controls it.
| Check | What good looks like | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Stays in character | Sounds like your companion, not a generic assistant | Review their personality; use God Mode to steer |
| Picks up what you said | Responds to your actual message and mood | Be specific; give them something to react to |
| Right length for the moment | Short for banter, long for a scene | Switch model, or switch Chat Mode |
| Moves the story | Adds something: an action, a question, a turn | Try Devotion; set the scene in your message |
| Leaves you something to answer | Ends on a question, a look, an invitation | Ask a question back to keep the thread alive |
Which one to use when
| You want… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quick flirting and banter | Crush | Lighter replies keep the rhythm fast |
| A good-morning or good-night check-in | Crush | Feels like a real text |
| To keep a fast scene moving | Crush | Gets to the next beat sooner |
| To vent or talk something through | Devotion | Longer replies that actually listen |
| A roleplay scene with setting and action | Devotion | More scene, more detail, more feeling |
| A slow-burn romance | Devotion | Takes its time, like the scene deserves |
| To direct the scene with God Mode | Devotion | More room to follow your direction |
| To make free coins last (free plan) | Crush | 1 a message |
Mixing it with Chat Mode, God Mode and voice notes
Chat Mode sets how your companion writes. Roleplay is a story with narration; Text is short messages, like a phone. Chat Model sets how much.
| Goal | Chat Mode | Chat Model |
|---|---|---|
| Texting energy | Text | Crush |
| Late-night talk | Text | Devotion |
| Quick, playful scene | Roleplay | Crush |
| Full immersive roleplay | Roleplay | Devotion |
God Mode lets you direct the scene: the tone, the pace, how your companion acts. It works on both models, but Devotion's longer replies give it more room to follow a detailed direction.
Voice notes read a reply aloud in your companion's voice. On Devotion, that means a longer listen; on Crush, a quick one.
Getting better replies from each
- Give them something to work with. A one-word message gets a smaller reply on either model. Add what you're doing, where you are, or how you feel.
- Set the scene once. Start a roleplay with the place, the time and the mood. Both models will carry it forward.
- On Crush, keep it moving. Short, playful messages suit its pace. Save big scenes for Devotion.
- On Devotion, slow down. Let the moment breathe; don't rush three events into one message.
- Wait for the reply to finish before sending the next message. Longer Devotion replies take a moment longer.
Switching mid-story
You can switch any time, and nothing is lost: your companion keeps the whole conversation and everything they remember about you. Many people use both in the same story:
- Crush for the build-up. Banter, teasing and small talk at a quick pace.
- Devotion when the scene deepens. Switch when the moment needs more feeling and detail.
- Back to Crush when you just want to chat.
To switch:
- Open a chat and tap the panel icon in the chat header to open the Companion Panel.
- Open Chat Settings, then Chat.
- Under Chat Model, tap Crush or Devotion.
The change applies from your next message.
On the free plan
Free users chat on Crush in Roleplay mode, at 1 a message. To get the most from it:
- Write fuller messages. You pay per message, not per word, so give Crush more to respond to.
- Earn free coins daily. The Daily Gift adds 10 to 70 a day. See how to get more coins.
- Subscribe for Devotion. A Companion or Intimate plan unlocks Devotion, Text mode and unlimited chat on both models.
